The Mind-Body Connection
Our bodies have natural physiological responses to emotions. When you become angry you may notice yourself sweating. When you’re embarrassed, your cheeks may flush red. When we are exposed to extreme or prolonged emotions, our somatic responses can become harmful. You may experience GI challenges from prolonged stomach tightness, migraines from stress, joint aches and pains from tension even if you don’t notice you are tight, vaginismus after a negative sexual experience, etc. It is always a good idea to consult with your doctor to rule out medical causes but if you believe some of your choric pain may be connected to past experiences, EMDR can help to release held tension and relieve some physiological symptoms.
